You ‘Gotta Start Somewhere

I apologize for being off the “blogosphere” for a few days.  I guess I will need to be reminded about being lazy when I get to that section of proverbs!

Today’s short passage is from Proverb 9:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.  11 For by me your days will be multiplied,
And years of life will be added to you.  12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself,
And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

Everything has to start somewhere.  Only God has no beginning.  Verse 10 is a fairly well known verse, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”.  The fear of God doesn’t mean a shaking in our boots kind of fear but rather a bending at the knees kind of fear.  The word “fear” has to do with respect or awe.  When we have this kind of attitude toward God we put ourselves in a position to lay a foundation for wisdom.  Having respect and awe for God as creator and sustainer of the universe, as an all powerful, all present God, is foundational to being able to rightly interpret and apply the wisdom that we receive from Him.

We also read that “the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”  I don’t believe that we can truly understand and interpret the world in which we live without knowing who God is.  There are just way too many things that don’t make sense without knowing about God.  Knowing God orders and categorizes the things of this world.  In this world everyone has to start somewhere, let’s start with knowledge of and respect for God.

In wisdom,
Eric
