Yes, There Will Be Judgment

Not long ago I was listening to a sermon that essentially denied the reality of hell. When preachers/teachers do this they often note that the word “hell” is not used very often in the New Testament. However, they frequently fail to mention passages like today’s passage in 2 Thessalonians 1.  Here are verses 7-9:  and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.  These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,”  It seems very clear to me that Paul is reminding the Thessalonians that those who are against them, and more importantly against God, will be punished.  God will “take vengeance” and “punish”.  And note that the word “everlasting” is used here.  Eternal punishment or hell is a clear teaching of the Bible.  Now, I don’t know what that is going to look like. What Paul emphasizes here is that those being punished will be separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power.  He also emphasizes destruction.  Finally, please note who is being punished.  It’s not the murderers or thieves.  It is those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of Jesus Christ.  This is who is being punished.  Do you know God?  You can only know Him through His Son, Jesus.  If you do not know God, you will face this judgment.  Why would you want to do that?
