Yes, “For Good”

Today is day four of our detailed look at Romans 8:28, one of the most well known verses in the New Testament.  Here it is:  “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”  Today we focus on the two words, “for good”.  All things work together for good.  “Good” means to be desired or approved of.  All things work together for good.  It doesn’t mean that all things are good.  It means that all things, even the difficult and tragic things, work together for good.  If God is God could it be any other way?  Is it possible that a sovereign, omnipotent God could want something not to ultimately be good for His children?  Is it possible that a Father could want something not to be good for His children? [note I said, “His children”…more on that tomorrow.] No.  That would be inconsistent with His nature.  The challenge for us is to trust that all things are working together, through the power and provision of God, for our good.  I admit to struggling with this.  There are some recent developments in my life that don’t seem good to me. But will I trust that God can work them together for my good?  Yes, I will trust Him.  I admit to failing in this trust for moments, sometimes longer moments than I would like, but I will trust Him.  What alternative do I have?  There are no other gods who are looking out for me.  To believe that God is somehow incapable of working things together for my good is inconsistent with His revelation and is certainly of no comfort to me.  So I’ll trust this amazing promise and I’ll trust that God’s definition of “good” is good enough for me.  I hope you will also.
