Which Voices Are Loudest?
In Luke chapter 23 we have recorded Jesus appearing before Pilate. The Bible is very clear that Pilate did not find anything worthy of death in Jesus’ life and in fact Pilate wanted to release Jesus. But he didn’t do that…why? Pilate didn’t release Jesus for the same reason many find themselves doing something they know to be wrong…because of voices. I’m not referring to any psychological disorder and the tragic reality that a small number of people actually hear voices inside their heads. I’m speaking to the audible voices that we hear and listen to of other people. After repeatedly saying that Pilate wanted to release Jesus we read this in verses 23-24: 23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested.
The Bible says that the “voices of these men and the chief priests prevailed”. These voices prevailed over what Pilate knew on the inside to do…they prevailed over what Pilate knew to be right. Pilate “heard” those voices over his own internal voice and he made the wrong choice. We all have voices that we listen to. They can be from family and friends, from co-workers, and even from the media…voices from people we know and those we don’t even know. How “loud” are those voices in your life? Are they louder than the voice of God…”spoken” to you by the Holy Spirit or by the word of God as you read it…or by other wise people in your life? Don’t be like Pilate and listen to the voices that go against what the voice of God is telling you and how He is leading you. Those other voices may be very loud at times but we cannot let them drown out the still, small voice of God that will never lead us down the wrong path.
