Where’s Your Mind?
Have you ever been asked the question, “Have you lost your mind?” I think I’ve been asked that at least once in my life. Paul has a very good test for us to use as we consider where our minds are and on what they are focused: Here is verse 5 of Romans 8: “5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” There is a commercial that I remember growing up that advertised the United Negro College Fund. The slogan was “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”. I totally agree. Those who have received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord now have the mind of Christ. Our minds are to be set on the things of the Spirit; not the things of the flesh. If we are governed by our flesh, our minds will focus on the things of this world and will not focus on the things of the Spirit. The transformed mind of Christ will focus or “be set” on the things that matter to the Spirit, actually being controlled by the Spirit. As Paul continues to describe the transformation from condemnation to completion, we see that when we are changed from the inside out, our minds are focused on spiritual things. That doesn’t mean you won’t think about “other” things, but the desires of your mind will match with the desires of the Spirit. So, “where’s your mind?”
