When Secular is Truly Sacred
Before turning to a section on submission, Paul concludes the paragraph describing the new man with the following words in chapter 3, verse 17: “17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Sometime people use the words “secular” and “sacred” to describe two different types or areas of life. The “secular” part is the part of life that doesn’t have to do much with God. Things like work, play, hobbies, etc…are “secular”. The “spiritual” part is prayer, worship, church, etc… But this is a false divide. There is no such thing as “secular”. Everything that the follower of Jesus does is “sacred”. Paul says that whatever you do in word or deed, do it in the name of Jesus. A relationship with Jesus is not defined by punching a clock nor is there ever “down time” from God or “vacation” from Him. Rather, every moment of every day is an opportunity to bring glory to God and to give thanks to the Father. Eating breakfast can be done in the name of Jesus. Exercise can be done in the name of Jesus. Work is done in the name of Jesus…just don’t use the name of Jesus if you hit your thumb with your hammer. When we realize that every moment is an opportunity of service to Jesus, we fully appreciate all that He has done for us and through us. So whatever you do…do it in the name of Jesus.
