When Life in Christ Leads to Death
In verse 3, Paul writes that the believer in Jesus has died and the believer’s life is hidden with Christ in God. So when the believer is alive in Christ, what happens to the believer’s life that he has before Christ? What does this new life in Christ mean for the old life? Paul has the answer in verses 5-7: “5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.” Our new life in Christ means the death of the old one. Paul characterizes this old life, this earthly life, as one of fornication, uncleanness, passion, etc… These actions are the actions that bring upon the wrath of God. So, if they bring on wrath, why would the believer want to continue to practice them? The new life in Christ leads to the ability to put to death the old sinful life. The problem arises when one claims to have a new life in Christ but still desires to live in uncleanness, passion, etc… If that is you then there is a problem. A person cannot cling to the old life while claiming to live a new life. I hope that you see the temptation to sin as simply a pull from Satan to the old life…this life no longer controls you but you can yield control to it. Life in Christ leads to death of the old life…let it die!
