What’s Your Foundation?
Psalm 82 is another psalm that has to do with judgment and justice. In this psalm the writer asks God to judge those who are wicked. Here is a description of the wicked and the effect they have: “They do not know, nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are unstable.” I’m particularly interested in the phrase, “all the foundations of the earth are unstable.” I’m pretty sure that the writer isn’t thinking about geology or astronomy here, contemplating that the earth is somehow resting on a foundation. Rather, this phrase is a commentary on how the wicked have placed the people of earth on unsure footing. That is what sin does. Sin places people on slippery ground. Sin doesn’t allow one to get a good hold on life. Jesus taught about this in Matthew chapter 7 as he challenged people to “build their house on the rock” instead of building on sand. I hope that you are building your life on a solid foundation; one of love, grace, truth, faith and obedience to the God who created this earth in the first place. A choice to “walk about in darkness” will lead to ruin and a life that is in shambles.
