What Is Your Defense Mechanism?

Let’s read Proverbs 18:9-11:

He who is slothful in his work
Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.  10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.  11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city,
And like a high wall in his own esteem.

In verses 10 and 11 we have a contrast in “defense mechanisms”.  In verse 10 we read that the name of the Lord is a strong tower.  The phrase “name of the Lord” is an expression which encompasses all of who God is.  His name represents His power and ability.  In verse 11 we are told that a rich man’s wealth is his wall; his defense.  What’s your “defense mechanism”?  What do you “run to” when times are tough?  Some have riches to run to.  Some have family to run to.  Some run to past hurts and difficulties as excuses to move forward in the present.  We all have some type of defense mechanism.

I think we should take the Lord’s counsel and run to Him.  When we run to the name of the Lord we are running to the One who can truly defend us.  We are running to the One who knows all of the details and Who knows exactly how best to defend us.

In wisdom,
Eric
