What Happened to the Shepherds?

We all have people that we wonder at some time, “I wonder what ever happened to them?”  I had the wonderful chance a few months ago to reconnect with one of my best childhood friends, Bud Amundsen.  He and his family lived on Bogar Lane for a few years before moving to Minnesota.  He still has family in the Mifflinburg area and comes back to visit occasionally.  We were able to spend a couple of hours together and I found out that he leads a Youth for Christ chapter on the other side of the country.  In fact, he and I have a mutual friend through Youth for Christ….it is a very small world.  Anyway, it was great to get an answer to the question, “I wonder what ever happened to him” as it relates to Bud Amundsen.

In Luke 2:20 we read this:  Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.  Then the shepherds fade off the pages of the Bible.  We don’t read in a later gospel account about a man who was one of the shepherds.  We don’t read about a disciple of Jesus ever coming out of this group of shepherds.  We aren’t given that information.  But I wonder if that might be true?  Wouldn’t it be great if one or all of these shepherds became followers of the “adult” Jesus…placing their trust and faith in Him?  Wouldn’t it be interesting if one of these shepherds who saw Jesus at His birth was also one of the hundreds of people who saw Jesus after the resurrection?

I’m thankful that God has everything in control and has everything lined up from His perspective.  My friend Bud is faithfully serving the Lord.  I wonder how many of the people in my life with whom I have lost contact are serving Jesus?  I might be surprised to find what some of them are doing.  They would be surprised to know what I am doing.  We don’t know what happened to the shepherds but we can pray for those for whom we wonder.  And we can faithfully serve the Lord ourselves so if others ask the question about any of us, they would find out that “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”.
