What a Savior!

The hymn, Hallelujah, What a Savior! is one of my favorites as far as lyrics are concerned. The first three verses of this hymn highlight the sin of mankind. Perhaps the most poignant one is the third stanza: “Guilty, helpless, lost were we; blameless Lamb of God was he, sacrificed to set us free, Hallelujah, what a Savior!” In my opinion those are some powerful words. The contrast between a sinner like myself and a Savior like Jesus is so clear. It doesn’t cause me to feel bad about myself. The language that the Bible uses to describe sinful mankind isn’t intended to make us feel bad. It is intended to help us to see who we really are and to help us to see our desperate need for a Savior. We are all guilty, helpless and lost. We are all trapped in our sin. But Jesus, our Savior, provides the way, through His own death on a cross, that we can be set free from the bondage of sin. That is so important. These old hymns deliver the theological truth that I hope we can hear and I hope we can be moved to worship Jesus Christ as our Savior.
