The Wonderful Sovereignty of God

Psalm 104 is a very beautiful psalm about the sovereignty and care of God over His creation. The psalm begins with God’s sovereignty over the waters of the earth and how God uses those waters to quench the thirst of every beast of the field. Then the psalm states that God provides the grass for the cattle and wine and bread for man. God even provides the trees for the nests of the birds. God is sovereign over the heavenly bodies in the sky, appointing a purpose for the sun; a purpose for daytime and evening.

The sovereignty of God is both a challenging and comforting thing for me. I’m challenged by why God allows natural disasters and why God allows things like cancer in His beautiful world. I know the easy answers to the questions but I long for better answers. However, I realize that I won’t get answers to questions I don’t need to have provided. That is where the comforting part is. I trust in my God. I rest in my God. I pray that verse 13 is true of me: “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live. I will sing praise to my God while I have my being”.  My God is sovereign over every aspect of this beautiful and yet sin stained world. The psalm ends with these words, “Bless the Lord, o my soul! Praise the Lord” I think I’ll just end there as well.
