The Unfortunate Summary of Man’s Religion
In Matthew 15, Matthew 15 Jesus is rebuking the Pharisees for their tradition, their man made laws which superseded God’s true laws. In verses 7-8 Jesus says this: 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. Jesus is quoting from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. Unfortunately, these words that were true in Isaiah’s day, and in Jesus’ first century timeframe, are still true today. All of us face this temptation, giving “lip-service” to our God without genuinely believing what we are saying. God doesn’t need my flattery or my words about what I think or feel. God knows what is in my heart…and yours also…God desires that we worship Him with our heart…our whole being…who we truly are. Unfortunately, Jesus and Isaiah have it right far too often, and unfortunately, too often Jesus is right about me. But there is the miracle of God’s grace. The opportunity to confess the “heartless” worship and way of life and enter into a genuine time of worship. Today is a new day. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
