The Source of Righteousness
Though the focus today is on verse 9, here are verses 7-9: “7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;” Paul talks about righteousness. As he wrote earlier in this chapter, Paul had a great religious pedigree. He checked all the right boxes. If anyone could be “righteous” through right education, genetics and behavior, it was Paul. But Paul writes that his righteousness did not come from himself but rather his righteousness came from Jesus Christ. The righteousness that Paul had in his life came through faith in Jesus; not through the law. There is simply no way that Paul or you and I can earn righteousness through our own attitudes or actions. There is just no way. Yet many people believe that they are earning righteousness through their behavior. But think of it this way, if righteousness could be earned then what was the point of Jesus’ death on the cross? Christ’s righteousness is available to us by faith and faith alone. I hope that you have received His righteousness by faith…Jesus is the only source of righteousness…and I know I’m right about that.
