The Promise Reiterated

As I read it, Genesis 13 doesn’t have a lot of content to comment on. In this chapter we read that Abraham and Lot part ways because of the size of their herds. Lot goes one way, toward Sodom, and Abraham goes the other way. Abraham, though he was the older and more wealthy one, allows Lot to choose where he will “pitch his tent”. Lot goes toward Sodom, and we all know how that turns out, and often much is made of Lot’s choice because verse 13 says that the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord. I’m not sure that Lot chose the land he chose because of any poor motive. The Bible says that it was well watered and good land.   It is certainly wise counsel to avoid getting close to evil and temptation but I’m not sure it’s fair to pin that on Lot from what we know in chapter 13.

At the end of this chapter God reiterates His promise to bless Abraham and to multiply his descendants. I’m glad that God often reiterates His promises. I’m a little “slow” to get it some times. Or, I find a promise hard to believe or live in such a way that I believe it. God often repeats His promises in His word. He repeats His promises to us regarding His activity in our lives today and His promises for eternity. Perhaps today is a day to review some of God’s promises in your life.
