The Main Purpose of the Bible

What do you think the purpose of the Bible is? Growing up we had a large family bible in the center of a coffee table in our living room. It was from the 1800s. It served as a nice thing to look at but we never opened it. For others, the bible is a list of rules and regulations. For others, the bible is a mystery, there is stuff in there that might be helpful but it appears too difficult to understand. The bible has many purposes, but at the end of John 20 we see what is the main purpose of the bible.   At the end of the chapter John writes this: 30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

This is the main purpose of the bible. “these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name”. Sure, the bible has other valuable things in it on relationships, forgiveness, kindness, great stories and examples, but the main purpose is to lead people to faith in Jesus Christ. I believe this is the reason people neglect reading it. Satan actively works to keep people away from God’s word because he knows the main purpose of it is to lead people to belief in Jesus….and the life that comes through that belief. This life has two aspects…eternal life in heaven, away from the separation of hell but also abundant life now. The bible isn’t just intended to read so you can go to heaven. The bible is intended to help you to live life NOW, in a way that pleases God and that benefits you. Jesus is the reason for the bible. I hope you understand that. If you are someone who doesn’t read the bible regularly, I implore you to begin doing so. Put down other things that you might be reading and read the bible first. You won’t regret it.
