The Golden Rule
The golden rule is typically stated as “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. I don’t know if most people know that this “rule” is essentially a paraphrase of the words of Jesus found in Matthew 7:12: 12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
This is a pretty good rule but one that most people don’t really follow because it doesn’t guarantee that the others will “do unto you” what you’ve done for them. We all know pretty much what we want done for us or to us, but how inclined are we to do that for someone else, with no guarantee that they will do anything for us? The follower of Jesus has a unique advantage over someone who does not know God because he/she is guaranteed that God will provide; even if the other person doesn’t “do unto you”. We are told in the previous verses that God has our back. We can ask, seek and knock and get what we need; though not always what we want.
Ask yourself if you truly live by the “golden rule”. Do you do for others what you want others to do for you? Can you continue to do for others even if they don’t do for you? That’s not easy but it is possible.
