The Experience of Wisdom

The “Experience” of Wisdom

The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way,
Before His works of old.  23 I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.  24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no fountains abounding with water.  25 Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was brought forth; 26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields,
Or the primal dust of the world.  27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 When He established the clouds above,
When He strengthened the fountains of the deep, 29 When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,  31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of men.

In this passage in Proverbs 8 the attribute of wisdom that is being exalted is “experience”.  Wisdom “tells us” that it has been around since the beginning of time.  God possessed wisdom from the beginning of His existence…which since God is eternal, is a very, very long time!  Wisdom was possessed by God before God created the world.  Wisdom was there when men were created.  There are two thoughts  I have here.

First, the fact that God possessed wisdom at creation reminds us that God did not make any mistakes during creation.  All the benefits we have been reading about together regarding wisdom, God possesses in their ultimate form.  God is wisdom perfected.  So, creation is pretty good!

Second, wisdom has “seen it all”.  Wisdom has “been there and done that”.  When we walk in the light of God’s wisdom, we need not fear that somehow Satan has devised a new trick or scheme that God has not seen yet.  There is nothing new to wisdom.  God’s wisdom is preparation for any and every situation we will ever face.  That should be comforting to us as we trust in His wisdom in our daily lives.

In wisdom,
Eric
