The Dangerous Path of Sexual Sin

The Dangerous Path of Sexual Sin

Proverbs 5 speaks to the dangers of sexual sin.  This begins a section of proverbs which deals with this issue.  We know that Solomon had hundreds of wives and hundreds of concubines.  A concubine was sort of a “royal mistress”.  I wonder if looking back on his life, Solomon began to see all of the errors of his ways in this part of his life.  Let’s read the first 6 verses:

My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
Lend your ear to my understanding,  That you may preserve discretion,
And your lips may keep knowledge.  For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey,
And her mouth is smoother than oil;  But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword.  Her feet go down to death,
Her steps lay hold of hell.  6 Lest you ponder her path of life—
Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them.

One of the things we see here and throughout the next couple of chapters is that “things are not always as they seem”.  We see a contrast between lips that seem sweet like honey but are in fact, bitter as wormwood.  We see a mouth that appears smoother than oil but in reality, is sharp as a two-edged sword.  Sexual sin always promises what it cannot deliver.  It obviously “delivers” but only for a short period of time.  And every single time sexual sin will cause great problems.  We will be reminded quite vividly of the dangers of sexual sin as we continue in Proverbs for this week.  I hope we will learn a lot and also be able to use these verses to help others we know who might be about to go down a wrong path.

In wisdom,
Eric
