The Character of Timothy

As Paul writes this letter to the Philippians he is in prison.  The communication process of the day was pretty primitive.  Paul wanted to know how the Philippians (that he cared so much about) were doing; so much so that he is willing to send his dear friend Timothy to the Philippians so Paul can know their situation.  Here are verses 19-24:  “19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. 20 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. 23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. 24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly.”  This is pretty high praise for Timothy.  First, Paul notes that Timothy genuinely cared for the Philippians.  There was a genuine desire to see the Philippian Christians grow.  Second, Paul says that Timothy does not seek his own, but rather the things which are of Christ Jesus.  This is such an important trait to have and I admit that it’s one that I can definitely improve on.  The Christian is commanded to put the interests of the gospel ahead of his/her own. I hope that this is true of you.  Finally, Timothy is said to have “proven character”. Paul and Timothy had spent enough time together that Timothy had convinced Paul of his zeal for the gospel.  I hope that people use the words, “proven character” when they speak of you.  Allowing the Holy Spirit to live out His ability in you is the way to go.  Let’s pray:  “Father, I ask that we would seek the things which are of Christ, even when that means setting aside our own plans.  I pray that You would be active in our lives and “prove” our character…the character that You have given to us. Amen”
