The “Can Do” and the “Want To”

One of my favorite passages of Philippians is verse 13.  Here are verses 12-13:  12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”  We should remember that these words come after Paul’s incredible discussion about the humility of Christ and His exaltation.  Verse 12 exhorts us to “work out our salvation in fear and trembling”.  God has granted us salvation and the presence of the Holy Spirit to do all that He desires. The Holy Spirit enables us to live on the outside in a way that reflects “Who” is on the inside.  We do this with a sense of awe, reverence and worship. Jesus’ followers will live differently than the world.  That’s not optional.  Then in verse 13 we are reminded that it is God in us Who is doing the work.

Sometimes there are times in our lives when we have the “want to”, the desire to do something for someone but we just can’t do it.  We don’t have the resources or the time or the ability to help.  Other times we have the “can do”, the ability, time and resources but we don’t have the desire to help.  Both of these can be frustrating.  However, as God directs us, He gives us both…the “want to” and the “can do”.  Whatever God has placed on our heart and mind to do, He will equip us to do it.  God is at work in us…please don’t ever forget that. The creator of the universe is at work in you…please don’t ever forget that.  Though you might feel inadequate, God is not inadequate.  He is working in you and through you for His good pleasure. Trust Him.  Rely on Him.  Seek out what God desires you to do and is equipping you to do.  Be thankful that it is God who desires to use your life for His good pleasure.  There is no better way to live than to live humbly; seeking God’s plan and purpose for your life.
