Take My Life

A couple of days ago I suggested an alternative title to a favorite hymn if that hymn had been written by a child. I would suggest the same thing with today’s hymn, Take My Life and Let it Be Consecrated to Thee. The title that a selfish child…or adult…might choose is “Take My Life and Let Me Be”. Unfortunately that seems to be the title that best fits the life story of so many; even me in more ways than I’d like to admit. So many seem happy to reap the blessings of living in a place like the United States, the affluence, the health, the freedom, but there is little desire to use those things to advance the cause of Jesus Christ.   Rather than yielding those resources for kingdom purposes, we choose to hoard them for our own benefit and use. This hymn’s stanzas exhort us to give control of our life, hands, voice, money, love and will to God so they can be dedicated or consecrated to the Lord. Is your life consecrated to the Lord? I really hope that is the case. God doesn’t want to “let you be”. God wants you to allow Him to be your everything…to be your all in all. Jim Elliott famously stated, “He is no fool who gives that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose”. The truth in that sentence is reflected in this hymn. Let’s yield our lives to God and then we can fully realize what it means to live!
