Stand Fast

As Paul nears the end of this section of his letter he shares this exhortation with the Thessalonians: “ 13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.” What enables the Thessalonians to “stand fast”?  I think there are several elements to this.  First, they were chosen by God for salvation.  They are not followers of Jesus by accident.  Second, they were called to obtain the glory of Christ. They can obtain this glory no matter how things turn out in this life.  This is an especially important concept.  We tend to evaluate our success on this side of eternity…not a really good idea.  Many who are successful on this side will have obtained little glory.  Finally, the Thessalonians, and you and me, have great traditions that have been handed down to us.  I don’t think Paul has in mind church traditions like worship style.  Rather, I think Paul has in mind the idea of the Scriptures. Paul handed down to them the truth of Scripture whether in verbal teaching or the written word.  Are you willing to “stand fast”?  Are you willing to use your selection by God, your opportunity to receive glory and the traditions of God’s word to help you endure this world, no matter what?
