Power In the Blood

There is a collection of hymns that feature the word “blood” prominently in the title. They are grouped together in the hymnal I am using: “There Is Power in the Blood”, “Are You Washed in the Blood”, “I Know a Fount”, “O the Blood of Jesus” and the list goes on. What is it about the “blood” that is so important? I’ll let the first stanza of There’s Power in the Blood say it for me: “Would you be free from the burden of sin? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood. Would you over evil a victory win? There’s wonderful power in the blood.” The only revelation that God has given to us stresses the importance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as an atonement for our sin.   Ephesians 1:7 says it very succinctly: “In Him (Jesus) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sin, according to the riches of His grace “. There are many, many more verses and the idea of the blood of Jesus as a sacrifice for sin flows throughout the entire revelation of God that we have. There is power in the blood. I pray that you have by faith applied the blood of Jesus to your life for the forgiveness of sin and also for the ability to live your life here on earth. As the last stanza of this great hymn reminds us: “Would you do service for Jesus your king? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood. Would you live daily His praises to sing?   There’s wonderful power in the blood.”
