Words to Be Amazed By…

Every once in a while there are passages of the Bible that just jump off the page to me.  This happened to me today with the following passage from Romans 8:  38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is an amazing expression of the incredible love that God has for us.  We cannot be separated from God’s by […]

The Foolishness of Idolatry

We all know the prohibition against idolatry.  God demands and deserves to be first in all of our lives.  But it is so easy to fall into putting other things first.  Both my devotional that I read and the Bible reading I did this morning point out this.  One of my favorite passages in the Bible regarding idols is found in Isaiah 44, beginning in verse 9.  I suggest you read it if you are not familiar with it.  Isaiah points out the foolishness of chopping down a tree, using part of the wood to burn to keep yourself warm […]

Once a Slave Always a Slave…

Deep in the heart of mankind is a desire to be “free”.  Or at least that’s what I’ve read….  I suppose it is true.  But are we ever really “free”?  I think the Bible says, “no”.  From a spiritual standpoint we are never really free.  We are never free agents.  We all serve someone.  In Romans chapter 6 the apostle Paul talks about the idea of being a slave.  15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that […]

Ever Think About the High Cost of Sin?

Many of you know that I am in the process of purchasing a home.  The closing is set for Friday morning.  Many of you have experienced the hassle of trying to verify your income and providing documentation for deposits and withdrawals for several months.  The company I’m working with now was asking me to identify deposits as small as $160 that I made two or three months ago.  On my way into work this morning I remembered that I have to call my bank in NY and have them send a copy of an insurance check that I received. Uggggghhhh!!!! […]

Why did God give us the law?

One of the criticisms of God by some is that God gave us all these rules.  People see God as a “cosmic kill-joy” for telling us things like sex is only for marriage and not to steal and not to lie and not to covet.  All the “fun” things in the eyes of many seem to be prohibited by God.  Of course, if you’ve ever been the victim of a thief or an adulterer or know someone who has an STD they picked up from a one night stand somewhere, it is very clear at least one reason why God […]

Great Resource to Listen and Share With Others

I don’t really have much to say today, spent several hours in the car coming here to NY to do a wedding tomorrow.  I listened to four sermons on my iPod on the way.  Wanted to recommend a series that Andy Stanley at Northpoint Church is doing on the family.  It is called “Future Family”.  I listened to three of them today and they were fantastic!  You can access Andy’s messages via northpoint.org.  I think you would really enjoy listening to them and they challenge me just about every time.  Two of the “greatest” compliments I’ve ever received were two […]

Does Anyone Have an Excuse Before God?

One of the most common arguments against the gospel is the question:  “What about those who have never heard about Jesus?”  When we tell people that the Bible says that the only way to have forgiveness of sin and eternal life is through Jesus Christ, one of the first objections is that there are many people who have never heard about Jesus.  Would God condemn someone to hell who has never heard about Jesus?  Of course, if you accept the premise that people who never heard about Jesus would not go to hell, you could argue that we are better […]

Together on the Wall

My husband informed me recently that our new heating system being installed would require my cleaning out the attic.   This is something I have been procrastinating for at least a decade.  Over those years I would go up many times planning to begin the task only to leave, overwhelmed by the job that lay before me.   Yesterday and today I went up determined to get started.  I grabbed a construction size garbage bag with the goal to fill at least one per day with stuff to be burned or given away.   I plan to do the same each day […]

Are You Completely Dressed Today?….

As the weather turns colder it is time to start to bring out the fall clothes.  Though I am certainly not a “fashion king” (just ask my wife that!) I enjoy wearing some different clothes as the seasons change.  And though I also at times struggle with knowing not to wear differing shades of blue or not wearing stripes and plaids, I’m usually pretty good at getting completely dressed.  I rarely leave the house with only one shoe or without any shirt.  You are probably like me…without the plaid and stripe part.  But are we really completely dressed?  In Ephesians […]

What Do You Do When You Hear the Words “Heart Attack”?

Yesterday afternoon I received a phone call telling me that my father had suffered a heart attack.  I was told that it did not appear serious and I was able to speak with him on the phone a couple of hours later.  I’m sitting in the hospital waiting room now while he undergoes a catheterization procedure to assess the damage and “fix” the problem if possible .   I know that many people receive worse medical news but news like this isn’t something that any of us wants to hear…so what do we do? Interestingly enough, my Bible reading this […]
