A Sobering Thought from the Life of Jeremiah

Jeremiah is a prophet who lived during a very difficult time.  He was prophesying to people who did not want to hear what he wanted to say.  He was living in a time when God’s people were rebelling against God and Jeremiah was the messenger of God’s coming judgment on the nation and people of Judah.  Jeremiah was imprisoned and attempts were made on his life.  However, he remained faithful.  There is a word from God to Jeremiah in chapter 16 that I find very sobering.  Here it is: The word of the Lord also came to me, saying, 2 “You shall not take […]

Something Really Worth Crowing About!

Somewhere along the way the word “crowing” came to mean boasting or gloating or bragging.  I’m not sure how this word came to be used this way.  From what research I was able to do…and no, I didn’t spend a lot of time on this…the word seems to get its meaning from the idea of a rooster showing off when crowing in the morning or at another time of the day.  I guess a rooster doesn’t really know how low he is on the totem pole of God’s creatures…and maybe that’s part of the meaning of the word I’m thinking […]

The “Fickleness” of Human Opinion

Please read the following paragraph from Acts chapter 28 and see what comes to your mind.  Paul and other shipmates have just landed on the island of Malta after their ship has been destroyed: Now when they had escaped, they then found out that the island was called Malta. 2 And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold. 3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on […]

The Slope Gets a Little Slippier…

You may have read a recent article regarding the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.  Apparently, shortly after Rev. Graham and his son Franklin met with Mitt Romney, the association removed an article from its website which stated that Mormonism is a cult.  The timing of this was apparently in response to an on line article from another organization.  I researched this pretty quickly but I believe the story is true.  The following is a quote from an ABC news story:  “Our primary focus at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has always been promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Ken Barun, chief […]

What Are You Persuaded By?

In Acts 27 the apostle Paul begins his journey to Rome.  Since this was around 60 A.D. the option of air travel was not available, nor could he take a train.  So, Paul boarded a ship.  However, the sailing was not very good and things turned dangerous.  Paul said, “Men I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and the much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.”  Nevertheless, the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.  (Acts 27:10-11)  As it […]

A Most Unlikely Conversion

People who believe the Bible understand that we come into a relationship with God by faith, not our works.  We can’t do anything on our own which qualifies us for heaven.  If you are reading this and think otherwise, I beg you to contact me so we can discuss this further.  But I find it troubling that while we don’t think we can do anything to qualify us for heaven, we can think that sometimes others can do things which disqualify them from heaven.  We can look at someone’s lifestyle or their attitude about God and think, even if it […]

A Right Attitude in Wrong Times

Tucked away in a little book of the Old Testament is one of the greatest praises to God that has been recorded and preserved for us.  It is found in the tiny book of Habakkuk.  Though Habakkuk is not “required reading” for most Christians, the message of this book is “required living” and it speaks to all of us at some times in our lives.  There are inevitably times when things are going wrong.  There are times when the circumstances and situations of our lives give the appearance that God is disengaged or even weak.  But that is never true. […]

What Are You Waiting For?

Most of us are procrastinators of some form or another.  Of course, we rarely procrastinate regarding something we want to do or something we are looking forward to doing, but if it is something boring or something that we think will be uncomfortable, we are likely to put it off….generally not a good idea.  Putting it off most often makes things worse!  Procrastination is not something new.  People have been procrastinating for a long time…even in the times of the Bible. In chapter 24 of the book of Acts in the New Testament, we read about the apostle Paul being […]

How Is God Like the Yankees?

Friday night I was watching game 5 of the playoff series between the Baltimore Orioles and the NY Yankees.  As a kid growing up I was an Oriole fan.  I have rooted for the Orioles for many years.  About 18 years ago I moved to New York.  I couldn’t watch Oriole games but I was able to watch and listen to Yankee games all the time.  I grew to know the players and to follow the Yankees.  During Friday night’s game I realized that I was actually rooting for the Yankees to beat the Orioles….I realized that I was no […]

What does God want?

Many times in our lives we ask ourselves the question:  What does he want? or “What does she want?”  We are confused, either because we are getting mixed signals from someone or simply because we are “dull of hearing”…of course that’s the case for most husbands!  But it is frustrating when we don’t know what others want or expect of us. In the Old Testament book of Micah, we read a very interesting verse in chapter 6, verse 8.  Here it is:  He has shown you, O man, what is good;  And what does the Lord require of you? But to do justly, To love mercy, And […]
