How Bad Is Sin….Really?

Each day I read “My Utmost for His Highest”, a daily devotional by a man named Oswald Chambers.  Chambers doesn’t write for the “faint of heart”.  He pretty much tells it like it is and doesn’t really care if you like it or not.  That was the way he preached and that was the way that he wrote.  If you are looking for a daily devotional, I highly recommend it.  You can find it at utmost.org.  Here is the beginning of today’s devotional: “Sin is a fundamental relationship— it is not wrong doing, but wrong being— it is deliberate and determined independence […]

Does God Vote?

Tis the season for politics and commercials, and commercials, and commercials and ……commercials.  Most of them contain some grain of truth but like supermarket tabloids, stretch the truth into incredulity.  But we endure them until the first Tuesday in November.  By the way, to my NY friends who read this blog, there are not nearly as many candidate signs on the grass here as there are in NY.  For those of you in PA, by now, the “Vote for…..” signs that are stuck in the grass are literally so numerous in NY  that they look like dandelions in the Spring. […]

My New “To Do” List

Are you a “to do” list person?  I am.  I write down on a piece of paper each day things that come to my mind that I know that I need to do.  Then I scratch through the things that I’ve done while adding to the list on the bottom….hopefully soon I can do this on my new iPhone and save the paper..well, I won’t actually write on the screen of the phone but you get my drift…This morning I was strongly impressed by the following “to do” list in Romans chapter 12.  My Bible has this passage under the […]

True Peace is Found in Jesus

Have you ever seen the bumper sticker which says, “Know Jesus, Know Peace…No Jesus, No Peace”?  I think this sticker is right on the money.  Today I was reading in Isaiah 56-58 and in part of this passage Isaiah is contrasting the life of the wicked versus the life of the godly.  Here is a portion of what he says about the wicked:  But the wicked are like the troubled sea, When it cannot rest, Whose waters cast up mire and dirt.  21 “There is no peace,” Says my God, “for the wicked.”  (Isaiah 57:20-21)  I know that we don’t have a lot of “coastline” in central […]

What Do We Really “Own”?

On Friday Janet and I became the legal “owners” of 126 Conley Rd. in Mifflinburg.  Since we’ve not sold our house in NY, we get the “privilege” of paying real estate taxes in two states….so glad to do my part!  If you’ve purchased a house recently you know that at least two trees have to give their lives for all the paper that you have to sign, almost none of which you are given time to read before signing.  But that’s not my point… My point today is on the word “ownership”.  We seem to be very concerned about owning […]

“All the Breaks” Doesn’t Guarantee “Success”

When we read the news online or if you still read the newspaper, it seems like there are people out there who seem to get “all the breaks”.  They are born with the silver spoon in their mouth or because of their beauty, riches, or athletic ability, they get everything handed to them.  Even when they make a mistake, others seem willing to quickly forget about it or to cover for them.  This may be true from a worldly standpoint but in God’s eyes, having “all the breaks” doesn’t guarantee success.  Paul writes in Romans 9 about his love for […]

Words to Be Amazed By…

Every once in a while there are passages of the Bible that just jump off the page to me.  This happened to me today with the following passage from Romans 8:  38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is an amazing expression of the incredible love that God has for us.  We cannot be separated from God’s by […]

The Foolishness of Idolatry

We all know the prohibition against idolatry.  God demands and deserves to be first in all of our lives.  But it is so easy to fall into putting other things first.  Both my devotional that I read and the Bible reading I did this morning point out this.  One of my favorite passages in the Bible regarding idols is found in Isaiah 44, beginning in verse 9.  I suggest you read it if you are not familiar with it.  Isaiah points out the foolishness of chopping down a tree, using part of the wood to burn to keep yourself warm […]

Once a Slave Always a Slave…

Deep in the heart of mankind is a desire to be “free”.  Or at least that’s what I’ve read….  I suppose it is true.  But are we ever really “free”?  I think the Bible says, “no”.  From a spiritual standpoint we are never really free.  We are never free agents.  We all serve someone.  In Romans chapter 6 the apostle Paul talks about the idea of being a slave.  15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that […]

Ever Think About the High Cost of Sin?

Many of you know that I am in the process of purchasing a home.  The closing is set for Friday morning.  Many of you have experienced the hassle of trying to verify your income and providing documentation for deposits and withdrawals for several months.  The company I’m working with now was asking me to identify deposits as small as $160 that I made two or three months ago.  On my way into work this morning I remembered that I have to call my bank in NY and have them send a copy of an insurance check that I received. Uggggghhhh!!!! […]
