Romans 12:12-13 contain five verbs that are very important to the life of the follower of Jesus, not just for the follower but for all those who watch the follower. Here is the verse: “rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer, distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.” I would like to ask you to take these phrases and put them against your life. Are you “rejoicing in hope”? Hope is a precious gift that is given to the Christian through the resurrection of Christ and the promises of God. We have hope in God’s activity in our lives, no matter the circumstances and we rejoice in His activity. We are patient in tribulation. We know that though there may be trials and tribulation now, there is a reason for those trials and we can be patient through them. Continuing steadfastly in prayer is so important. In prayer we put ourselves in position to hear what God is saying to us. Steadfastly implies a determination to pray, even when we don’t feel like it. Generosity and hospitality are hallmarks of the Christian life. We take care of each other and we do it with the right attitude. Take a few minutes on this Saturday and reflect on how your life fits in relation to these words and ask the Holy Spirit to shine His light of truth into your heart and mind…and make any needed corrections and rejoice in the obedience that you have.
