Mary’s Declaration

In Luke 1:26-37, the angel, Gabriel, has some amazing news for Mary.  In summation, Mary is told that 1) She has found favor with God…2) She is going to conceive a son even though she’s a virgin….3) This Son is going to be the Messiah….4)Elizabeth also is going to have a son….5)”With God nothing will be impossible”

That’s a pretty amazing list isn’t it?  That’s also a list that leaves a lot of questions to ponder like: “Why have I found favor with God?” or “That’s not what I learned about conception in health class?” or “What am I going to tell my parents and Joseph?” or “What does being “Messiah’s Mom” really mean for me?” or perhaps a simple “Say What?”  But in verse 38 of chapter 1 Mary says this, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord!  Let it be to me according to your word.”

Let that sink in a little bit.  I know that the Catholic church and others teach a lot of untrue stuff about Mary but don’t let the errant teaching of Mary being sinless or having never died (all of which is not true) cloud the amazing truth of Mary’s incredible response!  She said “YES” to God!  She said, “Let it be to me according to your word”!!!  That’s amazing.  No wonder Mary is given the promise that she would be greatly blessed.  Now, here’s my question for all of us.  In our circumstances and in our situations of life, are we willing to say, “Let it be to me according to your word”?  Are we willing to turn over the control and agenda of our lives to an amazing God; for whom nothing is impossible?  Or, are we going to hold back?  Are we going to qualify what we are willing to do for God or are we giving Him total access to everything we have and everything we are?  Oh, how we can learn from Mary!  Let’s make Mary’s declaration our very own!
