Let God Do the Work

 

In Psalm 40 David is thanking God for perseverance in a trial or a difficult situation. When we face these types of situations we should look to God to do the “dirty work”. Look at the first three verses of the psalm: I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. 2  He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. 3   He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord. Let’s look at what David says he is going to do and what God did. David did one thing…he “waited patiently for the Lord.” God did the rest. God “inclined to David”. God “heard David’s cry”. God brought David up out of a horrible pit and set his feet upon a rock. God established David’s steps and put a song in David’s mouth.

The late rock and roller Tom Petty had a hit song titled, “The Waiting Is the Hardest Part”. Maybe he was right. At least I think there is some truth to this. David, and you and I, have to trust God to do the real work. David waited patiently for the Lord. What can happen is that we get ahead of our skis. We don’t want to wait. We want action. We take matters into our own hands when difficult times come along. But in this case David waited patiently. God was not inactive. God did the rest. I hope that when you are in the midst of the trials of life you understand that what we must do is wait patiently for God to do the work.
