Jesus is the Best Priest
The writer of Hebrews continues making the point that Jesus is “better” than anything in the Jewish religious system, or any other system for that matter. Today the focus is on how much better Jesus is as a priest. A priest or pastor, is often considered a sort of intermediary between man and God. Now, this is not really a very good description. In fact, the Bible states that there is only one mediator between God and man, Jesus. Jesus is the only true mediator. The reason this is so is, in part, because of what verse 28 of chapter 7 says: 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
No earthly preist or pastor can be a true mediator because every priest or pastor has sin. A sinner cannot truly mediate for another sinner with a holy, sinless God. Only Jesus, who is both man and God and who is sinless, can be the mediator. Though priests and pastors can be very helpful…and hopefully they are…in finding ways for people to connect to God and in equipping the body of Christ to function most effectively, they really can’t do anything about the sin part. But Jesus can.
As we continue walking through the book of Hebrews please take a few minutes to remember just how amazing and awesome Jesus is. Just in these first seven chapters we have been reminded that Jesus is “better” than any previous revelation of God, the angels, Moses, the High Priest and the entire priesthood. Jesus is amazing and yet He is willing to help each and every one of us. What a Savior!
