If God Is On Your Side…

The next paragraph of Romans 8 contains a series of questions that we can ponder.  Let’s look at the first question in verse 31:  “What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us, who can be against us?”  I believe that the “these things” phrase refers to the previous section of Romans 8. Paul has reminded us that God will restore glory to His creation.  God has given us the Spirit of God who helps us in prayer.  God has given us a promise that all things work together for good for those who love God and are the called according to His purpose.  God has it under control.  How do you answer the question, “if God is for us, who can be against us?”  On the surface there are lots of people who can be against us.  Christians around the world are being persecuted at increasing levels.  Satan is against us.  Other people are against us.  But after having discussed some of God’s major abilities, Paul is reminding us that the most powerful and capable One is for us…not…ever…against us.  I am reminded of the hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”.  If you are not familiar with it, I suggest clickinghereand reading the words.  I’ll just quote one verse:  “Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing.  Were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing.  Dost ask who that may be?  Christ Jesus it is He.  Lord Sabaoth, His name.  From age, to age the same.  And He must win the battle”.  God is on the side of His children.  Never forget that.  Yes, in this world you will have tribulation and enemies and some of them will be as a direct result of your faith but God is on your side and God plus you is always a majority!
