How’s Your Inheritance?

Are you expecting an inheritance? Perhaps you plan to receive a large sum of money or the operating rights to a business that your family now owns and manages. For me, there won’t be a financial inheritance in my future but in 1 Peter 1 I am promised something far, far greater. Today we begin a look at the book of 1 Peter, a letter that the apostle Peter wrote to Jewish Christians dispersed, most likely because of persecution, to parts outside of Jerusalem. This piece of literature is full of wonderful truth and promises, but there is no promise greater in scope and magnitude than the one that begins this letter. Here it is: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. There is your inheritance if you are a follower of Jesus, having been adopted into the family of God through Jesus Christ. As a family member you have every right to this eternal inheritance, that doesn’t fade away, that is incorruptible and undefiled. This is an eternal inheritance of joy, peace and love, granted to you on behalf of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Whether or not you receive an earthly inheritance is not very important in light of this one. But this inheritance is conditioned on being a part of God’s family, a child of God. This only comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you’re not sure you are a part of His family, please message me and let’s talk. If you know you are a part of His family, rejoice today in your inheritance, and live this life in light of what the next life holds for you.
