How Do You Know Who Speaks for God?

One of the obstacles that both Jeremiah and Ezekiel faced was false prophets. False prophets claimed to have a word from the Lord when they did not. Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel have confrontations with false prophets and in Ezekiel chapter 11, the false prophet is killed by God. In our time there are many, many people who claim to speak for God, or even claim to have a word from God. How do you know? Of course, a quick test for me is that if they are on Trinity Broadcasting Network you can pretty much rest assured they do NOT have a word from God! Or, if they are dressed in clothes that cost more than your car you can assume the same thing. (sorry for the snarky comments but I think they are true…but they are not words from God)

We have a great advantage over the people of Ezekiel and Jeremiah. We have the written word of God. We have the ability to test everything someone says against the word of God. I’m sure there are some people who are used to exhort and challenge us truthfully but there are also many who are out to make a buck and/or gain power and fame. Your safest and surest thing is to spend 30 minutes each day with God in His word and in prayer. If you’ll do that, you’ll discover that you will “hear” God’s voice quite often in your own life and will not need a lot of other voices to speak for God. Also, you will see times that what others say about God and His activity confirms what God is saying to you…then you can be even more confident in what God is saying to you.
