Have You Been Delivered from Wrath?

Unfortunately it has become fashionable in church circles today, often in what some call the “progressive”(though I call it “regressive”) element of the church, to move away from the idea of  wrath and judgment; whether it be the wrath of God or the judgment of others.  I wonder if those people have ever read 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10?  As Paul concludes this section on the good example of the Thessalonians Paul writes this: For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”  Paul reminds the Thessalonians that they had turned to God from idols to serve the true God and to wait for Jesus, who, in Paul’s words, and since the Bible is the inspired word of God, in God’s words, “delivers us from the wrath to come.”  If there is no future wrath that those who have not turned to God will face, then why would Paul say this?  How does Jesus deliver some from the wrath to come if there is no real wrath to come? Is Paul simply making this up?  Is Paul trying to scare the Thessalonians into something?  No. Paul is simply reminding them, and us today, that when we have turned to God through Jesus Christ we ARE delivered from the wrath of God which will be brought in judgment on all those who have sinned and who have not turned to Jesus as deliverer from the judgment of that sin.  This is so clearly taught in the Bible that to deny it requires amazing mental gymnastics or, to simply deny that God ever intended for it to be written.  Like the Thessalonians, our example of how we live is intended to be a living object lesson for God to use to help others find Jesus Christ and avoid the wrath that is to come.  If there’s no wrath, this doesn’t make sense.  If you can convince me otherwise, I’d love to hear/read what you have to communicate.
