God’s “Direct Deposits”
I am old enough to remember when the words “direct deposit” did not go together. Some companies began directly depositing money into employee accounts in the mid 1980s but before then there was no such thing. Today, it is such a wonderful feeling to go on the internet, check my account and see that money has “magically” appeared. Perhaps some of you are experiencing that right now as your tax refunds are showing up in your checking account!
Though human beings have only been doing direct deposit for about 30 years, God has been doing direct deposit since creation. God deposits into our lives His grace, His love, His mercy, His peace, His blessings. We don’t “see” them being deposited but they are deposited by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Here is how Peter refers to this deposit in 2 Peter 1: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
This is how we have the ability to write God a “blank check”. By giving God a blank check, we let Him control the “account” of our lives and He will never “overdraw” us. (more on that tomorrow). Today, let’s rejoice in the direct deposit that God has made in the followers of Jesus through His Spirit. Let’s be encouraged by the fact that God has given us “all things that pertain to life and godliness.” We serve a great God!
