God’s Blessing on His People
You’ve probably read many things about thankfulness and being thankful leading up to this day so I’ll just continue with Psalm 85, the next psalm in our journey through all 150 psalms. Psalm 85 is not about thankfulness but hopefully we’d be very thankful if the words of this psalm were to be true for our land. This psalm is a psalm that asks God to restore favor and blessing to the land of Israel. I’m not sure of the timing of this psalm in the historical record. At one point the writer says that God has forgiven the iniquity of His people but in the next paragraph the writer asks, “Will You be angry with us forever?” Most of the psalm talks about God’s blessing on His people. I am not someone who likes to equate Israel of the Old Testament with America. I think that leads us to some very bad theological conclusions. However, many people of God reside here and I think that it is right to ask for God’s favor on our country and the people of the country who desire to follow God. I pray that this last paragraph is one that would be true of your land, wherever that land may be: “Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed. 11 Truth shall spring out of the earth, And righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good; And our land will yield its increase. 13 Righteousness will go before Him, And shall make His footsteps our pathway.” May you have a blessed Thanksgiving and may God’s footsteps be your pathway.
