God Owns It All

Some of David’s psalms focus on the majesty of God. To me, Psalm 24 is one of those psalms. I can remember over 24 years ago hearing this psalm taught for the first time and feeling a sense of awe as I thought about the God who is described in this psalm. Here is how it begins: The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.   Would you take a minute and think about the phrase, “the earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness…the world and those who dwell therein.” Everything in this earth belongs to God. We human beings like to think we can have “ownership”. We like to stake claims to stuff for ourselves. But do we really own anything? For example, we say things like, “we own a home”. But do you really “own” it? Is it really yours? If you have a mortgage you don’t really own the home, the bank owns the home. If you stop paying your mortgage you lose “your” home. If you have paid off the mortgage you still don’t own the home because if you stop paying your taxes you will be kicked off the property.

The earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness. You are the property of God. There’s no better “owner” than He. Through Jesus Christ you can be a child of God. You can have all the benefits of sonship through Christ. Would you rest in that this morning? Would you use that truth to celebrate your value and worth? The God who created the universe wants to be your friend. Wow!
