God Hates That

In Proverbs 6 we have a list of things that God “hates”. Of course it is an incomplete list because of when it was written. If it was written today it would also include the Eagles and the Steelers…but I digress. Here is what is listed in Proverbs 6: These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.  Some of these seem pretty obvious. The hands that shed innocent blood is one and there is a lot in God’s word about telling the truth. But I’d like to focus on the last phrase, “one who sows discord among the brethren”. As a Church of the Brethren pastor, I take that last one seriously, though Solomon, the writer of Proverbs 6, has a broader audience in mind.

Sowing discord means to say or do things that bring disunity and division. This is a grey area in some ways because it is obvious that we won’t always agree and sometimes we will even say and do things that hurt our brothers and sisters in Christ. But what do we do when we’ve been hurt or offended? The Bible is so clear about this. We are to go to the one that has hurt us and talk it out. This will cure almost 95% of any discord and conflict, when it is done. Unfortunately many people do not do this. They talk about it to other people, often painting someone in a negative light, sowing discord. Then it gets talked about some more, gossiped about (or “shared”) and the discord spreads. The Bible says that God hates this. Imagine how effective our testimony for Jesus would be if we did what God said…our relationships wouldn’t be perfect…there would still be people that we wouldn’t really want as best friends or even friends, but the discord would be reduced to a small amount, so much so that others would look to those in the family of God and want to know the difference. Please don’t take sowing discord lightly. God hates it.
