God Has “Made” You

We are now officially two thirds of the way through the psalms as we read Psalm 100 today. This is a great little psalm of praise and thanksgiving. I’d like to focus on verse 3: “Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” What are the implications of believing the phrase “It is He who has made us and not we ourselves”. First would be the understanding of creation, that we did not evolve and that God had a role in putting us on planet earth…He has fashioned and formed us. But there is much more to this I believe. I’m especially asking you to think about the phrase “and not we ourselves”. We have a phrase in our culture…”the self-made man”. We have phrases like, “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps”. Though words have surface meanings, and these phrases can communicate something truthful, they also can communicate an underlying idea that we are the captains of our own ships, the makers of our own destinies. Psalm 100 calls us back to a recognition that we are the people of His pasture. As such, we should be very interested in hearing the voice of the shepherd and be very interested in following God’s plan for our lives. You and I are not “self-made” people. Rather, we have been made by an awesome God and we should keep that in mind as we make plans and decisions for ourselves. This morning I suggest acknowledging to God His role in your life and then listen to see if He suggests any changes.
