Fishing for Taxes

Ok, this is a bit of a lighthearted post from Matthew 17   At the end of this chapter Peter is approached by the tax collector asking him if Jesus paid the temple tax. Jesus points out to Peter that as the “Son” He really doesn’t need to pay the temple tax but in an effort to not cause a fuss, Jesus agrees to pay the tax…but in a rather “catchy” way. He tells Peter to go to the sea, cast in a hook and take the fish that comes up first. Jesus tells Peter that in the fish’s mouth he would find a piece of money sufficient to pay the temple tax for Jesus and Peter. This is really weird isn’t it? I mean, why does Jesus do this? I’ve never run across anyone who claims to understand the spiritual meaning to fishing for taxes. Perhaps Jesus just wanted to give Peter another example of how amazing Jesus is. I don’t really know; however I think this is pretty amazing. This is a demonstration of Jesus’ supernatural power and I believe one that Peter probably never forgot. I hope that God has done some things in your life that you won’t forget. It may not be to this “scale”, but it can be meaningful just the same.
