Fear and Understanding
There is not much that sticks out to me in Psalm 111. There is a sentence that many of you have probably heard before. It is in verse 10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments.” What is wisdom? For me wisdom combines two words, knowledge and experience. In this verse wisdom and understanding are associated with fearing the Lord and doing His commandments. If you want to be wise, fear the Lord. There is no better place to start. And in my opinion you can’t fear the Lord if you have little to no regard for His commandments. Jesus said, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I say?” The very idea of calling someone “Lord” or “fearing Him” is sort of silly if we don’t keep His commandments. Now, no one is perfect…sin creeps into all of our lives, but the real beginning of wisdom is fearing the Lord. If you have a fear of God you are on the right path. Hopefully that fear leads to doing His commandments which will lead to good understanding. You’ll have moments where you will say, “Oh, that’s why God said to do it that way”. That’s understanding. I hope that you consider fear of and understanding the Lord to be important parts of your life.
