Ever Lose Your Way?

Let’s begin by reading Proverbs 14:5-12

A faithful witness does not lie,
But a false witness will utter lies.  A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it,
But knowledge is easy to him who understands. 7  Go from the presence of a foolish man,
When you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge.   The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way,
But the folly of fools is deceit.  Fools mock at sin,
But among the upright there is favor.  10 The heart knows its own bitterness,
And a stranger does not share its joy.  11  The house of the wicked will be overthrown,
But the tent of the upright will flourish.  12 There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.

My focus this morning is on verse 12.  Isn’t this verse so true?  Isn’t there often a way that seems right to us but it is in fact the wrong way?  Doesn’t revenge just seem like the right path to take?  Doesn’t it just seem right to inflict pain on those who have inflicted pain on us?  Doesn’t it seem right to hold a grudge?  It “feels” good and it seems like we are on the right road….but that road leads to death and destruction.

This verse is so true when it comes to salvation.  When most people think about getting to heaven they think about being good.  They think the right “way” is to do good deeds or at least not too many bad deeds.  But that way leads to death.  Even though it seems right to more than 9 out of 10 people, it leads to death.

It is pretty easy to get lost while driving and being lost is not a good feeling.  Perhaps an even worse feeling is thinking that you are on the right road and finding out you are not.  That’s what God’s word does for us.  His word helps us stay on the right road, the road that leads to both abundant and eternal life.  So, don’t trust your own way…instead follow the signs in God’s word.

In wisdom,
Eric
