Don’t Go Near the Door of Sexual Sin

Proverbs 5 continues with the theme of the dangers of sexual sin.  Let’s read verses 7-14 below:

Therefore hear me now, my children,
And do not depart from the words of my mouth.  Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house,  Lest you give your honor to others,
And your years to the cruel one;  10 Lest aliens be filled with your wealth,
And your labors go to the house of a foreigner; 11 And you mourn at last,
When your flesh and your body are consumed,  12 And say:
“How I have hated instruction,
And my heart despised correction!  13 I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,
Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me! 14 I was on the verge of total ruin,
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”

Solomon warns the reader not to even go near the door of the house of an immoral woman.  The implication is that if you go near the door, you are likely to enter into the house.  Proximity to the temptation is important.  The farther we stay away the less likely we will find ourselves in a bad situation.  Distance reduces the pull of temptation like distance reduces the pull of a magnet.  In 2 Timothy 2:22 the apostle Paul writes:  Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.  We are to run away from the temptation of sexual sin, not hang around with the false notion that we can “handle it”.

Look at the way the consequences are described.  Verse 11 talks about one’s “flesh and body being consumed”.  That’s about as bad as it gets doesn’t it?  And yet, each of us knows at least one person who has essentially been consumed by the fires of lust and sexual sin…losing family, friends, job, etc…  Giving in to sexual sin will often lead to total ruin…On that note…have a great day!
