Do You Belong to God?

In Romans 8 Paul writes about the idea of belonging to God and being His son. Perhaps the most important question for any of us is, “Do I belong to God?” This is not a very difficult question to answer, at least according to Paul. Look at how Paul tells us that we can tell if we belong to God: But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Pretty simple isn’t it? If a person does not have the Spirit of Christ then he/she “is not His”. We do not belong to God unless we have the Spirit of Christ. If the Spirit of God dwells in us, then we are no longer in the flesh but in the Spirit…we are able to be called the children of God.

This chapter contains much about the contrast between the flesh and the Spirit. The issue is not performance or pedigree. It is simply relationship. If by faith, we have entered into a relationship with the living Christ, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and we belong to God. And if we belong to Him, then we are heirs of the promises that He gives. It really is that simple and that powerful. Do you belong to God?
