Different Kinds of Roots
One of the interesting things about roots in trees is that they are not always the same. Different trees have different kinds of roots. Two basic types of roots are those that go deep and those that go wide. Some tree roots extend deep into the soil while other tree roots are pretty shallow, but they go far out in the horizontal direction. I say “whatever works” is a good philosophy when we are talking about tree roots.
I would say essentially the same thing as it relates to our spiritual roots. There are a myriad of different ways in which to put down spiritual roots. Some people spend a lot of time reading the Bible while others might spend more time in prayer. Some like to journal and others do not. Some find deep meaning in the arts or expressive dance. It really doesn’t matter what kind of roots you put down, what your “structure” is; so long as you have a structure. What works for you is what is best.
The big challenge and major point is that you are putting down spiritual roots. The joy of this process is getting alone with God and asking Him what He would have you to do. Have you done that? The available resources for spiritual “rooting” are pretty much limitless. And anything can work…if God is in it. So, if you want to be unique; go ahead. Perhaps right now God would have you climb a tree each morning and meditate on putting down roots…but if He does that please make sure and dress appropriately! Find the plan that works for you and stick with it. You won’t be disappointed.
