Confident?

If you are over 40 you probably remember a commercial for “Sure” brand deodorant which had a jingle which went something like this:  “Confident, confident, dry and secure…raise your hand, raise your hand…if you’re sure”.  I guess the idea was that if you used Sure brand deodorant you could be confident to raise your hands in the air without having to fear embarrassing underarm stains.

Confidence is an important quality to have.  It makes life a lot easier to live.  Let’s read Proverbs 14:25-27:

25 A true witness delivers souls,
But a deceitful witness speaks lies.  26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence,
And His children will have a place of refuge.  27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
To turn one away from the snares of death.

My focus is on verse 26.  I think that confidence as a quality of a child of God is way underrated by our culture, even by the church.  There is strong confidence in trusting in the Lord and fearing Him.  His children will always have a place of refuge.  Do we really understand this?  Do we really understand that if we belong to God and place our faith in Him, we can be confident?  NOTHING can happen to you that is not a part of God’s plan for your life.  Nothing can happen to you that God is unprepared for.  You and I might be unprepared for it but never God!

That, my friends is confidence.  Be sure to understand that your confidence is not in yourself….that’s like trusting in sweaty armpits!  But your confidence is in God and His ability.  Then we can be “Sure” as we walk through each and every challenge that life brings to us.

In wisdom,
Eric
