Be a Tree!

Here are the words from Jeremiah 17:7-8: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. for he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river. And will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.” Essentially Jeremiah is telling us to “be a tree”. Sometimes we are told to “be a rock” or to “be a winner”. Here we are told to “be a tree”. Personally, I think I’d like to be an apple tree because I really like apples…but then I guess if I was an apple tree it would be weird to actually eat apples…but I digress…

This tree is a special tree. It is a tree that has roots spread out by the river. This tree has plenty of water because it is tapped into the source of water. This tree doesn’t fear the heat or the drought and will not cease from yielding fruit. If you are familiar with the Bible you can see the connection to some very prominent metaphors in the Bible. First, Jesus is the living water so we are to have our roots in Him. Second, we are also to remain in Jesus so that we can bear much fruit, regardless of the season. If we will trust in the Lord and put our hope in Him we can be like this tree.  So “be a tree”, tap into living water in Jesus Christ and allow Him to bear fruit in your life.
