Are You Ashamed of the Gospel?
After writing that he was praying for the Romans and that he desired to serve the Romans, Paul writes this: “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Paul was not ashamed to tell the Romans the gospel of Christ, the truth that Jesus is God’s Son, that He died on a cross to pay the penalty for their sins (and ours) and rose from the dead to provide new life. Paul was emphatic that this gospel is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes. This is still true today. There is no salvation apart from the gospel of Christ. Paul also notes that in this gospel the righteousness of God is revealed. You and I need this righteousness from God in order to be saved. But the main idea of this post is not to define the gospel. I think most of you know what the gospel is. Rather, I want you to consider whether or not you are ashamed of it. Are you willing to distinctly live your life displaying the gospel of Christ and are you willing to share it with others? If not, why not? Is it shame? Are you embarrassed by the gospel? Are you afraid of the reaction of others? The gospel of Jesus Christ is the news that people MUST hear in order to live their best life both on earth and then in eternity. Why should we not desire to share that with everyone? We share recipes and recommendations to restaurants. We share our thoughts on movies and businesses…but many are ashamed to share the gospel. The reluctance that many have indicates to me a Satanic element to the opposition to the gospel. But God is greater! I can meet with you for less than one hour and help you be equipped to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you don’t regularly share it, please take a moment to ask yourself “why”? And then take steps to remove the obstacles. For the follower of Jesus to not share the gospel is a sin. Repent and put your shame away and live a life of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. You won’t regret it.
