Another One “Unbites the Dust”

For some strange reason the old song, “Another One Bites the Dust” from Queen ran through my mind this morning as I finished Luke 8. Yesterday in Luke 7 we read of a young man who was raised from the dead by Jesus. Today at the end of the chapter we read of a young girl who is raised from the dead by Jesus…the little girl “unbites the dust”. When Jesus arrives on the scene there are many who are mourning her death and then we read this: 52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” 53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. I want to focus on the last phrase, “knowing that she was dead”. I believe the girl was dead. All those in the crowd knew that. But when we talk to Jesus we need to be careful about what we say that we “know”.   For us there is a certain finality to many things in life. We can do no supernatural things. We are bound by time and space…but not God. It’s not a difficult thing for God to “unknow” something that we think we know. We think we “know” that a friend or loved one will never turn their life around. We think we “know” that our situation is hopeless. We think we “know” that we cannot forgive someone who has wronged us. But what if we invite Jesus into the situation? Is it possible that what we think we “know” can be “un-known”? If Jesus can raise a girl from the dead, could He not change our situation and circumstance? I think the Bible is intended to help us to know that He can do that.

What do you “know” that is keeping you from seeking God’s activity in your life? I believe that a relationship that has bitten the dust can be resurrected. I believe that a grudge that has been held for years can be healed. I believe…do you?
